What is Oral Medicine:
Oral Medicine is a specialty of dentistry concerned with the diagnosis and non-surgical management of a variety of conditions affecting the teeth, mouth, and jaws.
The scope of Oral Medicine includes:
- Temporomandibliar disorders (TMD), commonly called “TMJ Pain”
- Myofascial pain, headaches, & neck pain
- Oral appliance therapy for medically-diagnosed snoring & sleep apnea
- Post-traumatic mouth, jaw, & facial pain
- Atypical toothache (odontalgia) & neuropathic pain after dental procedures or injury
- Soft tissue lesions & conditions, including tongue pain, canker sores, lichen planus
- Infections such as herpes (cold sores) & candidiasis (thrush and other forms)
- Oral dryness (xerostomia) & other salivary problems (e.g. Sjögren’s Syndrome)
- Oral burning & Burning Mouth Syndrome
- Dysgeusia, phantom tastes, & other taste or sensory complaints
- Halitosis (bad breath)
- Other conditions
