The Doctors

        Stuart Taylor DDS, MSD

Dr. Taylor grew up in the United Kingdom, and graduated from Dental School at the University of Manchester, UK in 2000. He practiced dentistry for several years before coming to the University of Washington to do research in dental radiology. He stayed and earned his certificate and a MSD in Oral Medicine in 2008. He is currently the Director of the Dental Urgent Care Clinic at the University of Washington School of Dentistry.

Dr. Taylor is an active member of Faculty at the UW and involved in teaching the current UW dental students. His interests include the early diagnosis of oral cancer, emerging imaging techniques for oral mucosa, and the role of genetics in common oral diseases. He enjoys spending time with his family, skiing, climbing in the Pacific Northwest, and until recently, played rugby for the Seattle Rugby Club. Dr. Taylor enjoys the opportunity and the challenge of helping his patients find solutions to their oral medicine problems.


     Simin Nakhjiri DDS, MSD, MS

Dr. Nakhjiri received her dental degree from the University of Umea in Sweden in 1992. After practicing dentistry for five years, she came to the University of Washington in 1998 and received her certification and a MSD in Oral Medicine in 2002. With the support of a grant from the National Institutes of Health, she went on to earn an additional MS degree in Oral Biology from the UW. She joined South Sound Oral Medicine in 2002.

Dr. Nakhjiri is a member of the American Academy of Oral Medicine (AAOM) and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM). Her special clinical interests include sleep apnea and snoring, oral mucosal lesions, and TMD. Dr. Nakhjiri enjoys activities with her family, travel, and walking. She is dedicated to helping her patients find solutions to their oral conditions and takes great satisfaction in doing so. Dr. Nakhjiri believes in treating each person with respect, compassion, and care.


   Peter van der Ven, DMD, PhD

Dr. van der Ven graduated from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1981. He completed a general practice residency at the Oregon Health Sciences Center a year later and then spent three years as a staff fellow at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, where he did clinical and laboratory research in salivary function, taste, and oral dryness. After another year of research in the Netherlands, he came to the University of Washington in 1986.

Dr. van der Ven earned a PhD in Oral Biology from the UW and became board certified in Oral Medicine in 1996. He started working at South Sound Oral Medicine in 1995. His special interests include salivary complaints, taste problems, and neuropathic pain. Dr. van der Ven is a good listener and enjoys translating what he hears and sees into individualized treatment plans for his patients. He lives in Seattle and enjoys time with his family, home maintenance, and learning to ride and repair an old motorcycle.
