Oral Medicine is a specialty of dentistry concerned with the diagnosis and non-surgical management of
a variety of conditions affecting the teeth, mouth, and jaws.
The scope of Oral Medicine includes:
• Temporomandibular disorders (TMD), commonly called “TMJ Pain”
• Myofascial pain, headaches, & neck pain
• Oral appliance therapy for medically-diagnosed snoring & sleep apnea
• Post-traumatic mouth, jaw, & facial pain
• Atypical toothache (odontalgia) & neuropathic pain after dental procedures or injury
• Soft tissue lesions & conditions, including tongue pain, canker sores, lichen planus
• Infections such as herpes (cold sores) & candidiasis (thrush and other forms)
• Oral dryness (xerostomia) & other salivary problems (e.g. Sjögren’s Syndrome)
• Oral burning & Burning Mouth Syndrome
• Dysgeusia, phantom tastes, & other taste or sensory complaints
• Halitosis (bad breath)
• Other conditions
